Celebrate Sharks and the Oceans on World Oceans Day

The San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean shapes the climate, the commerce and the health of the people of the Bay Area. The ocean is so vital to us every day, but is often overlooked and taken for granted.

Each year thousands of ocean supporters, including the San Francisco non profit Shark Stewards, will celebrate the ocean on World Oceans Day, June 8.

“World Oceans Day" provides an opportunity to focus special attention on our world's shared oceans. We can celebrate our personal connection to the sea, as well as to raise awareness about the crucial role the ocean plays in our lives and the increasingly critical need for each of us to help conserve our natural resources.

On Sunday June 8, youth from the Mt Tamalpais High Ocean Conservation Club and community members will be recognizing the challenges that face the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean, but also celebrating an improving Bay ecosystem and our recent victories in shark and ocean conservation.

The public is invited to join us celebrating the ocean and all ocean life, and do your part helping protect the ocean and the Bay we love, from the plankton to the sharks.

About World Oceans Day

Officially held on June 8th of each year – is an opportunity to celebrate our world ocean and our personal connection to the sea. World Oceans Day, which had been unofficially celebrated every 8 June since its original proposal in 1992 by Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008.

We can help make others more aware of the importance of the world’s ocean in their daily lives by showing them ways to improve their impact on the ocean by, for example, reducing plastics use, and limiting CO2 emissions. In joining with thousands of people all over the world in celebrating World Oceans Day, we can make a real difference for our oceans of life!
