Nancy Mackle Appointed New City Manager

Mackle, with 14 years of experience under her belt, was appointed the new city manager.

Council members announced that Nancy Mackle, a San Rafael employee of 14 years, will be taking over as city manager today.

Mackle, 52, most recently served as deputy city manager, the economic development director and the public information officer for the city.  As city manger, she will coordinate public affairs, oversee the volunteer program and carry out policies enacted by city council. She is replacing Jim Schutz, who has been acting as interim city manager since November 2010.

“I’m delighted and excited about the possibilities,” she said about her new position.

Mackle is a graduate of University of California, Berkeley, where she studied business administration, city planning and public policy. Before she came to Marin in 1999, she worked in Pinole, Emeryville and Fremont.

During her time in San Rafael, Mackle was instrumental in developing the downtown business district and improving housing conditions in the Canal area.

“Nancy has accomplished a great deal in her years in San Rafael and she has all the skills required to get us through these difficult recessionary times while providing high quality city services to our community,” Mayor Al Boro said.

Mackle was unanimously chosen out of 82 applicants from all over the country.  Her new salary starts at $186,500–a 12 percent increase from her previous pay.

“Her academic background, in addition to her deep knowledge of the city, make her uniquely qualified for the position,” Boro said.

Boro and other council members congratulated Mackle at last night’s city council meeting.

As city manager, she will face a $4.4 million deficit. “We have a great city council, “ she said, “and we’ll have to work through that together.”
