Marin Grassroots: Affordable Housing Opponents are Too Hostile

More than 50 people gathered at the Marin County Civic Center to echo concerns about aggressive meeting behavior.

Fed up with hostile meeting environments, those behind Marin Grassroots and other community members gathered outside the Marin County Civic Center cafeteria Tuesday at noon to discuss how Marin housing critics have paralyzed civic participation.

Marin Grassroots Executive Director John Young said he is calling on Governor Jerry Brown to look at the state of public discourse in Marin.

Young said at recent meetings about affordable housing, including a June Plan Bay Area debate at the Board of Supervisor Chambers and an April Plan Bay Area hearing at the Marin Civic Center Auditorium or a June 26 meeting Supervisor Susan Adams held in Marinwood about housing, affordable housing proponents were repeatedly heckled and threatened.

He said Marin Grassroots, which works to help people engage in public discourse, is struggling to encourage people to attend the meeting because of the hostile atmosphere.
