Marin Symphony: National Young Composers Challenge Composium

Marin Symphony: National Young Composers Challenge Composium

Sunday, October 6, 2013, 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.

What is a composium? It's like a concert, plus a master class, plus a competition. It's informative, dramatic, and entirely thrilling — exciting to experience as a participant or as an audience member. Witness an amazing afternoon of excitement, drama, and music. You’ll hear the winning compositions by America’s best young composers rehearsed, discussed by Maestro Christopher Wilkins, and performed by Conductor Alasdair Neale. The afternoon begins with the winning chamber ensemble compositions performed by musicians of the Marin Symphony. Each composer is then interviewed by Maestro Wilkins, and orchestra musicians and receives feedback. Next, each of the three full orchestra compositions are performed, with the audience hearing a portion of the young composer’s computer-generated MIDI score as well. Then the composition is briefly rehearsed, giving the composer an opportunity to interact with conductor Christopher Wilkins, the orchestra musicians, and the judges. Sessions conclude with a presentation of the final recorded performance of the composition.
