Baby Skunks Uncovered at Mill Valley Storage Facility

Do you know how to tell if a baby wild animal needs to be rescued? Scroll down for a link with more information.

Workers at a Mill Valley storage facility had a quite a surprise when they moved a heavy storage container at the end of last month — they found week-old skunk babies.

Since their den was destroyed when the container was moved, the seven infant skunks were brought to WildCare in San Rafael. They will grow up in foster car until they are old enough to be released to the wild.

The babies, which had their eyes and ears still closed when they were found on April 21, hadn’t developed enough to develop their scent glands that release the all-too familiar skunk smell. After their scent glands develop when they are roughly three weeks old, the babies will often practice using their defense mechanism during play to master effecting aiming a jet of scent into the face of a predator.

Wondering what skunks eat? Their diet includes slugs, snails, mice and rats. Read more about the baby skunks here on the Wildcare website.
