Margaret Wang, an eighth-grade student from Miller Creek Middle School, became the California State Junior High Spelling Bee Champion on May 12. Miller Creek Middle School hosted the Spelling Bee, which included 54 seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade students from 27 counties throughout California. Julie A. Fukunaga, an eighth-grade student from San Joaquin County, finished second and Fayyaz Ahamed, an eighth-grade student from Kings County, finished third. The assistant principal at San Rafael High School just got a new job at a Marin City non-profit.
Assistant Principal Whitney Hoyt will be leaving San Rafael High School this year to join a Marin City non-profit. Hoyt will become the educational director of Bridge the Gap College Prep, the Marin County non-profit group which serves Marin City students through tutoring and after-school programs. “I am looking forward to working with Bridge the Gap and their great team of dedicated staff and volunteers to help close the achievement gap of Marin City students,” she said. Grants can be used for: Grants will be awarded at the discretion of the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Peninsula Press Club. Three fifth graders from Dixie Elementary School took home the grand prize in the Marin County Elementary Science Fair. Blake Benson, Nick Cauz and Jack De Graves won in environmental science for thie project "Lead Is In What?" There were 150 projects entered in the fair for fourth through sixth grade students. The Marin Independent Journal reports that Rozzi Crane, a 20-year-old graduate of Marin Academy, sings a duet with Maroon 5's Adam Levine on the soundtrack for the new movie The Hunger Games. Crane and Levine sing "Come Away to the Water," (listen to the recording above) written by Irish singer Glen Hansard. Hansard won an Oscar for his song "Falling Slowly" from the movie Once in 2007. The Hunger Games, based on the popular teen book trilogy by Suzanne Collins, is set in a futuristic world where adolescents have to fight to the death in a dangerous forest. The movie opens tomorrow. Two students won prizes at the 44th High School Jazz Festival held in Boston.
Marin Academy jazz musicians took home prizes after their trip to the Berklee College of Music's 44th High School Jazz Festival in Boston. Saxophonist Michael Blasky and keyboard player Tom Wilson won Outstanding Musicianship Awards at the festival, which included more than 3,000 students and 200 bands. Bands from all over the country competed for $175,000 in scholarships in the five-week performance program that began March 10. Listen to a recording of the Marin Academy band.
