What!? no comments from Marin Tea Party's anti-tax wing-nuts? Where's your big mouth now?

Interestingly worded headline. It would have been better to say that Hispanic students who make upRead More two thirds of the school population had two thirds of the expulsions. Or roughly what in line with their numbers.

OK, so we know the railing is not just to keep people from stepping on the plants. "Look beforeRead More you leap." comes to mind. Still half of the pedestrians fail, "look both ways BEFORE crossing the street. I would rate this story closer to the thrill seeking teen that jumped off the GG bridge, though he knew there was a big drop. The blow hole incident was more of a misjudgment of the power of waves. We read about someone being swept off our beaches often. That one was extra sad.

It would be nice to have an updated field for when stories are modified. That photo really changesRead More the story.

Congratulations to Miller Creek Middle School and all of the teachers, staff and adminstrators thatRead More continue provide great instruction and school environment. It is particularlly troubling that it is under assault by targeted funding cuts by the State.

This tells us how well we are doing maintaining our schools:Read More http://www.edsource.org/today/2013/california-drops-to-49th-in-school-spending-in-annual-ed-week-report/25379#.UWTbqZPvh8E Although, even with about the lowest (49th) dollar per student in the US, decent teachers were able to get students test to rank 30th in the country. This is the cost of the 2/3 minority part rule laws and Prop 13. Looks like we may have to feel some pain or ignore the future. Thank goodness our parents did the right thing. http://www.edsource.org/today/2013/california-drops-to-49th-in-school-spending-in-annual-ed-week-report/25379#.UWTbqZPvh8E

why?

I am voting NO on both. It never seems to end. Tax after tax and then they ask for more. YesterdayRead More we hear that the new lottery powerball game will add $50Million more to the schools. Where will that money go? Prop 30 passed last fall with more money to the schools. Where will this money go? All discussions from schools administrations and teachers seems to be centered around wanting more money. Few conversations about what is being taught and how it is being taught to our kids. The school system accepts little responsibility for poor results always blaming it on a lack of money. No responsibility yet it is "give us more money". In the real world when you ask for more money you tell people what they will get for their money. Why more money now? Vote NO to this and let's see how they operate. I bet little if anything will change. We could always float yet another election asking for more money once it is cleared exactly why the money is needed. And how about the thousands of people who live in apartments? Most people living in apartments are sending their kids too public schools yet they do not directly participate in this tax. Why is that? Exactly when is enough enough? Apparently NEVER! when it comes to the schools. Vote NO!

Parents were encouraged to take their kids home. We were even called while the kids were at theRead More Armory. There are approximately 700 kids at the school so not sure how only 200 were evacuated. Maybe that number does not include all of the students turned away at morning drop-off, and possibly many busses were rerouted? The school staff, law enforcement and emergency personnel did a fine job today. Venetia Valley families are thankful!

as a parent it is my experience that the parents are usually far more shaken from these sorts ofRead More events up than the kids. Many of the kids view this as a fun event as kids do. For them it was something new to do. Glad it turned out to be a hoax or false alarm. Onward. .

Somebody must have not wanted to take their star test.
Michael April 26, 2013 at 12:04 pm
too bad none of these subjective surveys focuses on how well a school prepares a person for LIFERead More not just for college. Most of us who do go to college need lots of support from those that don't go to college. Life is so much more than college. A college degree won't fix your car, plumbing, landscaping, construction, food prep, and on and on.

What a great cycling community we have in Marin! Everyone please remember to lock your bikes with aRead More strong lock! If your lock is light weight and convenient for you it's easy pickings for a thief. Get a big heavy U Lock and use it! Congrats Uly!

Anyone have bicycle or locked property stolen in Terra Linda last Wednesday? I found a cut cableRead More lock just off the sidewalk. Really odd side it was next to the sidewalk and not tossed into the bushes. I figured who ever was that lazy might have left finger prints. If the prints belong to a felon, go check their house for stolen property. I called the police, but they never picked it up. FYI: The SRPD said a lot of bicycles are getting stolen.

Sometimes the good guys win. I never saw any of my bicycles again.

A very good friend of mine had her locked bike stolen in Oakland. A very nice Specialized. Not tooRead More much help from the police, so she scoured CraigsList daily and saw an ad for her bike posted. She contacted the police and together they set up a sting and met the seller, police arrested him - - and she got her bike back. Sometimes the good "guy" wins.

These guys were brazen! The bike was locked (with a really thin cable, unfortunately) right in frontRead More of our studio. Door was open and we were 30' away! Gave chase, but they slipped away. Looks like they have raised plenty to replace it on indiegogo. Pelo sponsors SRHS Dawgs Mountain Biking and the NORCAL league with special classes and discounts. www.pelofitness.com

I've put the word out to my bay area friends to keep their eyes open for this bike. Has he doneRead More anything to personalize it in any way that would make it recognizable? Mirrors, or anything added, stickers, decals, that would say it's his...how could anyone tell it was his if they saw someone riding it around? Put it out on your facebook pages, pictures of him and his bike...anything that would help find it. ( It would be nice to find it and have another as a spare--and to catch the thieves would be a special bonus!)

Will they be discussing home drug testing at the event? Teen addicts in treatment tellRead More myteensavers parent involvement like this event and home drug testing can prevent teen abuse. Thankfully Ms. Wandzilak has a forum to talk to these parents. Hopefully they will be open minded and listening.

Information is power. Hopefully we will hear from other colleges and universities on their plans forRead More graduating students in four years. Parents and students should check directly with the Admissions Department for colleges and universities in which they have an interest in attending.

Here is another article about UC coaches salaries.Read More http://www.ocregister.com/articles/coaches-316441-nobel-laureates.html "The top UC coaches earn, on average, three times more than the system’s full-time Nobel laureates. The top eight coaches earned an average of $1.2 million in 2010, while UC’s eight full-time laureates earned an average of $403,000." http://www.dickmeister.com/id117.html "Hard times continue at the University of California - except, of course, for UC's very well cared for administrators. Their six-figure salaries continue to grow handsomely while the pay of those who teach and do most of the university's other work remains stagnant, and even as student tuition and fees increase and qualified students are being turned away." I am not sure when government jobs began earning at the same level as private industry jobs. The difference in pay use to be justified by the better retirement and benefit package. Now it seems they get a private industry salary and all the other perks that go with a tax payer subsidized job. At the very bottom of the pyramid are the students. If we can't cut back salaries to increase classes and give students what they need then our system is failing.

Novato Native It is so frustrating to see kids work their tails off and then not have a clear trackRead More to a degree because too much money is going to top tier staff in the UC system. Here is a link to an article by the teachers union. http://www.cft.org/universities/394-uc-budget-qa.html "Possible Salary Reductions" "Q: Is it true that we are going to have our salaries reduced? A: It is very possible that the UC may decide to cut all salaries 5% or use a furlough system to accomplish the same thing. However, in the case of lecturers and librarians, the university has to negotiate any salary reduction. Q: If the UC is broke, why would the union resist a 5% salary reduction? A: We do not think the university is broke, and we want them to prove to us that they need to make these cuts. Q: Why do you think they are not broke? A: The university brings in billions of dollars every year in profits from medical services, extension programs, parking, housing, research, patents, and fund raising. They are just trying to maintain a high level of disposable income, while they claim they are poor. (see http://universityprobe.org/2009/04/budget-lies-a-letter-to-the-president-of-uc/)" I don't know who is telling the truth and who is lying I just know that kids that are a hairs breath away from a degree can no longer get classes in impacted schools. I thought the JC path was a way to insure success but it looks like that is broken too.
