A brush fire burned 1,000 square feet of vegetation at the base of San Rafael Hill behind the Elk Lodge parking lot on Mission Ave./Photo by Google Maps.

"He reminded residents and visitors not to use or discard smoking materials near flammableRead More vegetation." Why are they reminding residents? These fires are not being started by residents, but by the homeless camping illegally on the hill. When will the police crack down on this illegal activity? Will it take an out-of-control fire destroying the historic and irreplaceable Elks Lodge and Falkirk Mansion? Or maybe homes burning down and residents being displaced? Or worse, an encampment of homeless being killed by a fire? Why is no one but the fire department concerned about this?
To celebrate reaching 4,000 Twitter followers, the San Rafael Police added stickers with their Twitter handle @SanRafaelPolice to some of their police vehicles. Credit: San Rafael Police

Well said, Michael. It is sad how tethered people are to their cell phones, tablets, etc. SomeRead More cannot even wait a few minutes to do their "brown business" in a public restroom without talking on their cell phone.

Too bad there isn't as much outrage over this as there was on the homeless in San Rafael. Who'sRead More dangerous?

Parents were encouraged to take their kids home. We were even called while the kids were at theRead More Armory. There are approximately 700 kids at the school so not sure how only 200 were evacuated. Maybe that number does not include all of the students turned away at morning drop-off, and possibly many busses were rerouted? The school staff, law enforcement and emergency personnel did a fine job today. Venetia Valley families are thankful!

as a parent it is my experience that the parents are usually far more shaken from these sorts ofRead More events up than the kids. Many of the kids view this as a fun event as kids do. For them it was something new to do. Glad it turned out to be a hoax or false alarm. Onward. .

Flushing unwanted medications down the toilet or throwing pills in the trash can cause unintentionalRead More safety and health hazards, according to the police. By now I think this phrase needs to be restated as... Flushing unwanted medications down the toilet or throwing pills in the trash causes safety and health hazards. We know this causes problems. This has been stated publicly many times. Now when people do this (flush meds down the drain) they are intentionally causing damage (it should no longer be considered unintentional). We need to make people take full responsibility for their actions or their ignorance. It would be like stating that driving while drunk can cause unintended safety and health hazards when in reality driving while drunk can cause intended safety and health hazards. People need to be held accountable, no excuses.

A fire extinguisher in your car, what a smart idea. Thank you for quick fire response and helpfulRead More citizens. The fire could have been worse. Good job well done.

This article initially (and incorrectly) said the accident was off southbound 101. We just confirmedRead More with the California Highway Patrol that it was actually off northbound 101. Sorry for any confusion we caused. We regret the error.

How many "minor incidents" have there been in the last 10 years Mr. Herbst? Do you keepRead More track?
Bob Herbst April 23, 2013 at 03:20 pm
I am the airport manager Mary Hanley refers to above. I was out of town on Friday and was notRead More interviewed for the Patch article or any other article regarding this landing. The descriptions she objects to seem to have come from the police on the scene, and seem pretty accurate to me based on the photo attached to the article. I would note the photo shows the plane came to rest ON the runway (i.e, the plane did not slide OFF the runway), which is typical in belly landings where the landing gear failed to extend. These are minor incidents that rarely if ever result in any injuries and typically the plane is repaired and put back into service.
Kevin Moore April 21, 2013 at 07:25 pm
More of a hard landing than a crash. Looks like the landing gear was retracted, possibly due toRead More pilot error or mechanical problems.
