The Mission San Rafael Arcangel was founded in 1817 as a Spanish mission and is what the town of San Rafael was originally named for. St. Raphael parish now includes the original mission (rebuilt in the 1940s), the main church, St. Sylvester's Chapel, and a preschool and K-8 school. The parish also hosts a small museum and gift shop, open daily from 11:00am - 4:00pm, for the visitors and tourists that come to see the mission.

The modern parish boasts a diverse and active Catholic community. There is a strong emphasis on the Hispanic, Vietnamese and Brazilian communities within the church. The parish hosts regular masses, youth ministries, and participates in community volunteer programs and efforts. Parishioners participate in serving dinner to the homeless, working at St. Vincent de Paul's in downtown San Rafael, and running the Canal Welcome Center, which serves the Latino community.
