Marin Independent Journal is a local daily newspaper available for purchase at Marin newsstands or for early morning delivery by subscription. The paper emphasizes local news such as civic government, crime, education and business as well as sports, features, entertainment and opinion. Space permitting, the paper is backfilled with Bay Area, California, national and international news.

In August 2011, the IJ moved its headquarters from Novato to San Rafael and placed its complex of three buildings on Alameda del Prado for sale. The paper's staff now works out of 4000 Civic Center Drive, Suite 301, in Terra Linda.

The IJ has a solid reputation and an award-winning track record. Dozens of plaques from the Associated Press and California Newspaper Publishers Association are displayed in the newsroom. But in recent years, the newspaper industry has struggled to generate revenue from retail and classified advertising that resulted in staff cutbacks at the IJ and a much thinner daily product. Circulation, once as high as the mid-40,000s, is in the 20,000s today. Once the workplace of nearly 300 people, about 80 people work there as of 2011.

The paper was founded in 1861 and was based in San Rafael for most of its life. In the early 1980s, private owners sold the paper to the Gannett Corp. and moved the whole production to a plant adjacent to Highway 101 in Pacheco Valle, quiet area in South Novato. Even after Gannett sold majority ownership to MediaNews Group in 2001, Gannett's USA Today was made at the IJ's press. Also, weekly papers in the MarinScope group and other publications are printed on the IJ's press. But in spring 2010 Gannett announced it was moving USA Today to a plant in the South Bay, and in September 2010 plans were announced to have the IJ's production switch to a plant in Concord as of October 2010 resulting in about 30 layoffs.

On the paper's website, you will also find a daily e-edition of the IJ that you can subscribe to at a discounted rate.
