Scouting for Food -- Scouts Collect Food for Food Bank

On Saturday, November 19, Scouts, volunteers, and parents will be collecting food throughout Marin beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Scouts and their leaders will be traveling door to door through neighborhoods to collect non-perishable food placed in front of houses. Many homes received door-hangers with instructions which were distributed during the previous week.

The annual service project known as Scouting for Food is the largest one-day service project by the Scouts in Marin County and is conducted solely to support the Marin Food Bank. Since its inception in 1988, the food drive has collected 934,000 pounds of food. That’s an average of 40,600 pounds per year!

“Service has always been an important component of Scouting,” says Michael Dybeck, Executive Director of the Marin Council. “By serving the community through projects such as Scouting for Food, our Scouts are developing valuable leadership and citizenship skills that will last a lifetime.”

There are nearly 2,000 Scouts in Marin ranging from Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and our co-ed program called Venturing. Collectively these Scouts log over 30,000 hours of community service each year.

If there were no door-hangers dropped in your area or if, for some reason, your food is not picked up, the food may be dropped at the Food Bank or the Marin Council office in San Rafael.
