Terrapin Crossroads = Deadhead Nirvana

The Lesh family will be creating a shrine to musical greatness which opens March 2012 in San Rafael.

Easily reachable via car, bus, bike or even boat (via private dock), this is their gift to the Bay Area.  The venue will take over the current location of, with the related Palm Ballroom next door to be referred to as “The Grate Room”.

Terrapin Crossroads will feature acts such as Phil Lesh & Friends, “Rambles” with guest artists, etc.  Parking is abundant at the venue and in the area, and with their deck on the canal, this should be a ‘grate’ place to be on a sunny day!

First, let me personally thank the Lesh family for having the perseverance and vision to see this come to light.  I can only begin to imagine the time, effort, money and stress involved in trying to create something such as Terrapin Crossroads.  I would like to think of it as their gift to all of us.  A place to go and hear great music, be uplifted and become inspired to greatness.

Let us focus on the musical aspect for a moment.  If you are a deadhead like myself, this could become deadhead nirvana.  Phil holding court in person, or Dead family bands, or Dead inspired bands, or Dead tribute bands.  And Phil talks about having a “Telstar night – we put together a band for free form improvisation”.  Um, excuse me?  Phil Lesh, one of the greatest (read: “The Greatest”) improvisational bassists of all time, allowed to roam freely?   This could be dangerous, folks!  My deadhead friends, 60+ minute jams will not be out of the question. I’ve always wanted to hear Phil in this realm, allowed to just let it all hang out and do his thing, with no limits.  Can you imagine it?   I get the shivers just thinking about standing in front of his amps for one of these.   My fellow deadhead, just ponder the possibilities . . .

I wonder what they have in store for us when they open in March?  According to his son Grahame’s blog:

“There isn’t all that much else I can tell you except to look for a pretty epic run of opening shows in March. Like…epic.”

Buckle up, kids.
