Looking for a Kitty? Try 'Meow Luau' Saturday

Summer is the busiest time for cats entering the shelter. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter wants to spice and entice new cat owners to take them home with a Hawaiian-themed adoption day.

For the second year the is hoping to spur cat adoptions with food, music, prizes and a Hawaiian-themed Saturday.

From noon to 4 p.m. the shelter will be a place to get leied and kittified, at a cut rate. Adoptions are only $50 for the day, a significant bargain that includes vaccinations, spay/neuter, microchip, Felv/FIV testing, a wellness exam, treatment for fleas and worms and a carrier.

Cat adoptions are usually $100 and kittens $120.

"Everyone here loves Hawaii," said Melanie Sobel, General Manager of the SCCAS, about the theme. "In Chicago, Hawaii is just a dream. But in Santa Cruz, everyone has been there."

There will be vegetarian pineapple teryaki burgers, ukelele music and Hawaiian dance to spice things up.

“During the spring and summer months, as the weather gets warmer, cats begin new breeding cycles and many cats and kittens enter the shelter,” said Sobel.  “We urge anyone looking for a companion animal to come to the shelter to support the local homeless animals in the community.”

At last year's event 59 cats were adopted in four hours. On a normal day, 5-15 cats are taken home.

This event is a joint partnership between SCCAS and local animal welfare organizations Animal Friends Rescue Project (AFRP) www.animalfriendrescue.org, Animal Shelter Relief (ASR) www.animalshelterrelief.org, and Project Purr www.projectpurr.org.

Your hotlink for the AFRP has a typo, and thus does not link to the organization. You've missed the "s" at the end of "friends" in the URL.

One of the best cats we've adopted is now almost 18 years old. She's added so much love and joy to our lives - we also have two others who allow us to live with them. I wish we could adopt more but they say more than three makes you a "crazy cat lady."
