Humane Society: Keep Pets Far from Fireworks

In an effort to prevent runaways, officials recommend bringing animals indoors when residents expect to hear fireworks, and to shut the blinds or close the curtains, and turn the TV or music volume up.

While Marin residents may delight in the region's annual Fourth of July fireworks displays at the County Fair and elsewhere, their furry companions may not enjoy the festivities as much.

That’s the message from the Marin Humane Society, which is advising people to leave their pets at home and indoors if they are going to go watch fireworks shows on July 4.

“It’s important for pet guardians to remember that fireworks displays can be a very traumatic time for pets,” said Carrie Harrington, spokesperson for the Marin Humane Society. “Loud noises can frighten animals, and in an attempt to find refuge, some will panic and even run away from home.”

Animal shelters across the country report an increased number of lost companion animals after fireworks displays, Harrington said. Officials recommend bringing animals indoors when residents expect to hear fireworks, and to shut the blinds or close the curtains, and turn the TV or music volume up.

“And always make sure your pets are wearing current identification so that if they do become lost, they can be returned to you promptly,” Harrington added.
