Sneak Peak: San Rafael Teens Sing and Dance in 'Crazy For You'

San Rafael High School drama and music students have spent weeks preparing for this musical, which premieres Thursday night at the high school’s auditorium. See a short sneak peek and highlights of the musical’s first act, including a clip of the song “I’ve Got Rhythm,” above.

The performance, directed and produced by Mill Valley resident Joan Deamer, stars San Rafael High School junior Miles Allen as Bobby Child, the son of a rich banking family who longs for a career on stage — to the disappointment of his mother. When he’s sent to Deadrock, Nevada, to foreclose on a theater, he falls in love with Polly, played by San Rafael High School junior Gianna Ciaccio. Unfortunately, Polly is automatically angry with anyone involved in trying to close the theater.

Bobby Child resolves to put on a show to save the theater and win the affection of Polly, the only woman living in Deadrock. But the gesture becomes complicated with impersonations, mistaken identities and unrequited love.

“If only all foreclosures today could be solved by putting on a show!” Deamer wrote in her director’s notes.

The play also stars students Chris Domer, Jeremie Massaloux, Bella Breen and 17 other cast members. Also, all but two of the members of the live orchestra are involved in the San Rafael High School music program. 

Choreographer June Cooperman, who lives in Mill Valley, has been working with Deamer for three years to produce the San Rafael High School musicals. 

Cooperman, who is also does choreography for 142 Throckmorton Theater’s Youth Performers, said she enjoys working with the local youth because they have a high standard for their performances. 

The 411: The performances are Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. There also is a matinee on Sunday, March 24, at 2 p.m. Tickets at the door are $15 for adults and $10 for students/seniors. Student tickets purchased at the student store are $5.

Also this weekend same weekend, Terra Linda High School students are performing a spring musical “In the Heights.”
