San Rafael Hosts 'Every 15 Minutes'

San Rafael High students experience the real life dangers of an alcohol-related collision, without the real life costs.

What if your child died in an alcohol related accident and you never got to say those things you wanted before he or she passed?

That's what some parents of San Rafael High School students will be wondering today as a result of the Every 15 Minutes program -- an exercise where students experience a "real life" scenario of what happens after a drunk driving accident.

Today, a Grim Reaper called students out of a classroom every 15 minutes, symbolizing the frequency of deaths due to alcohol related collisions. Then, a police officer reads the student's obituary before he or she rejoins the class as the "living dead" -- pale face and coroner's tag. The "dead" students then refrains from speaking to their peers for the rest of the day.

Students also witness a staged  fatal traffic collision, where firefighters and paramedics treat victims of the wreck.

Check San Rafael Patch tomorrow for video on the assembly, where a memorial is held for "deceased" students and lawyers argue in a mock trial for the drunk driver.
