San Rafael High School Students Earn Top Honors in MoneyWise Contest

Two San Rafael High School teams earned cash for videos they created about financial responsibility.

 

The California Council on Economic Education (CCEE) recently announced that a four-student team from San Rafael High School, led by instructor Abigail Shapiro, won first place in the 2013 MoneyWise Teen Contest for a video they created about managing personal finances. The winning team included students Rebecca Brown, Frances Casey, Natasha Sharp and Roslyn Yeager.

Other students from San Rafael High School, those involved in the school’s Media Academy, earned second place. Instructor Jeannine Thurston led the four-student team, which included Deny Cruz, Christian Garcia, Erik Rodas and Morgan Russell.

The contest focuses on understanding of the proper use of credit cards, credit scores and the banking system to become financially successful. The teams submitted videos focusing on their understanding of human capital, scarcity and skills they have learned to make better financial decisions. See one of the videos above.

The San Rafael teams competed against 33 other high schools and hundreds of students across Northern California.

Instructor Abigail Shapiro and the students were awarded cash, as were the second and third place teams. A team from Rio Americano High School in Sacramento won third place.
