San Rafael High School Jazz Bands Prepping for Annual ‘Big Band Dance’

Check out our video of San Rafael freshmen and sophomores practicing swing-era music.

Local youth jazz bands have been spending weeks rehearsing swing-era music for the annual Big Band Dance, slated for Friday, May 17, at the San Rafael Community Center.

The dance is expected to draw more than 200 students, parents and community members in attendance, according to San Rafael High School Music Boosters Co-President Beth Levison. It will include jazz bands and a jazz choir from San Rafael High School as well as the Davidson Middle School Jazz Band.

The San Rafael High School bands set to perform at the dance include the “Jazz II” band, featuring freshmen and sophomores and “Jazz I,” which is made of mostly juniors and seniors. See members of the SRHS Jazz II Band practice for the Big Band Dance in the above video.

The dance is a fundraiser for the San Rafael High School Music Department and San Rafael High School Music Boosters. Tickets for the dance, which will include dinner donated by Sol Food, will be $5 for students and $20 for adults at the door.
