From Mae to Midler: The History of Comedy in the Movies

Dominican University's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a membership-driven program designed to provide intellectually stimulating opportunities for adults in our community who are 50 years or older. The OLLI Institute brings an exciting variety of courses from topics such as film, art history, politics, and literature to its summer session, one of which is the From Mae to Midler: The History of Comedy in the Movies course, taking place on Thursdays from September 16, through October 21, 2010.

This course will take you on a journey from early silent comedies through Hollywood's golden years of madcap and mayhem. Genres within the genre will include slapstick, romantic comedy ("Rom-Com"), comedy teams, classic character performer, depression-era escapism, pre-code scandalous wit, musical comedy, best film comedy directors and a celebration of clever screenplays. We will explore the current popularity of gross-out comedies, the lack of female comedians in film, and comic social satire from the perspective of how far is too far. For more information contact the OLLI Institute.
