Transit Agency Seeks North Bay Interns

Metropolitan Transportation Commission is look for high school students to fill 36 paid summer internships this summer.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission is searching for Bay Area high school students to intern this summer at transportation agencies throughout nine Bay Area counties.

The MTC high school internship program offers paid summer internships at agencies all over the Bay Area. The MTC, which oversees transportation planning, financing and coordinating of Bay Area roads to local transit agencies, is accepting internship applications until March 8.

"The program's purpose is to introduce student to potential careers in transportation," MTC Executive Director Steve Heminger said in a statement Friday.

Students will be employed either full-time or part-time for up to 10 weeks between June 26 and Aug. 31 with public agencies in a department related to transportation planning or engineering, public works or public transit. Interns are paid $10.25 per hour.

Thirty-five internships are available throughout nine counties including Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Jose, San Mateo, Solano and Sonoma counties.

According to MTC program manager Ann Macaulay, there is a high demand for student interns in Marin, Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties.

To apply students must be at least 16 years old by the start of the program this June. Students graduating this spring are eligible to intern this summer, program officials said.

Applicants must have a minimum unweighted 2.8 GPA and a letter of recommendation. Those with GPAs below the requirement will be considered for a position if they can provide two letters of recommendation instead of one.

The application also asks students to describe a transportation problem in their community and ideas to resolve that transit problem.

Applications must be submitted online. More information about the internship program and application can be found here. For further information speak with MTC high school internship coordinator Michelle Tan at (510) 817-5807.
