Supes Pick Weber as Marin County Fire Chief

Having spent much of 2012 as the interim fire chief for the Marin County Fire Department, Novato resident Jason Weber got the official nod for the job this week by the Marin County Board of Supervisors.

Weber, 36, had been serving as interim chief since Chief Ken Massucco retired in March after 37 years with the fire department. He was selected to head the 86-member department from a pool of 49 applicants and seven finalists. Massucco became the interim fire chief in Novato late last month after Marc Revere abruptly retired on the heels of a performance review.

Massucco said county officials made a great choice.

"I'm extremely elated that the board picked him because he's a natural leader and has a great sense of community," he said. "I know he will do a great job and I expect great things under his leadership."

“We are excited that Chief Weber will be permanently leading the men and women of our fire service,” Board of Supervisors President Steve Kinsey said in a statement. “I know he’ll provide energetic, enthusiastic and skilled leadership for the department. Jason continues a culture of strong values and a ‘can do’ attitude. We look forward to his continued command and fresh perspective.”  

Weber was a volunteer with the Schell-Vista Fire Protection District, a mixed volunteer and career fire district covering the community surrounding Sonoma Valley, for 20 years. He served as president of the California Fire Exploring Association for the past 10 years.

"I look forward to working with all our communities to ensure Marin remains the safest place to live, work and enjoy," Weber said.

Weber lives in Novato with his wife and two children.

The Marin County Fire Department has six fire stations, two fire lookouts and a 12-member crew. There are 86 employees, 60 seasonal firefighters and 25 volunteers.

The Marin County Fire Department's annual operating budget is approximately $19.4 million. Weber's salary is $171,954.
