Prize Fighting Champion Will Attempt to Appeal Permit Decision for Pro Boxing at Albert Field

Paul Nave, a former WBF champion, was denied a permit to hold professional boxing matches at Albert Field.

A former boxing champion will attempt to appeal the city’s decision to deny a permit for professional boxing matches to be held at Albert Field at tonight’s meeting.

Paul Nave, a former World Boxing Foundation champion and president of Liberty Boxing Enterprises, LLC., was denied a facility use permit in May after his request was reviewed by the San Rafael Director of Community Services Carlene McCart, according to the staff report.

The report stated that Albert Field would be an inappropriate venue for a boxing event because it would not support an estimated 2,000 attendees when it came to seating, restroom facilities, garbage service and extra boxing equipment.

The Albert Field baseball stadium, built in the 1950s, accommodates 700 people, not counting the additional temporary seating installed along the baselines. Last year, there were approximately 600 uses of Albert Field, from community events to baseball games, according to McCart.

“There is likely to be damage to the field (due to placement of seating, equipment and large crowds) with this proposed unique use that the city will not be able to repair quickly given the time and resources available,” the report said.

The report also stated that the noise from cheering spectators as well as the added need for security and parking would cause problems for neighbors in the area.

Nave recently approached the San Rafael Park and Recreation Commission when by Centerfield Partners, LLC. to bring professional minor league baseball to Albert Field.

“Why baseball and not boxing?” he asked.

Nave has competed in and promoted prize fighting events held at the Marin County Civic Center, Gnoss Field and other indoor facilities. He will address the city’s concerns in attempts to reverse the city’s decision.

Other agenda items include an update on the city’s budget, and a presentation honoring the retiring members of the Library Board of Trustees. See the full agenda on the right.
