Point Bonita Lighthouse Reopens this Weekend

Lighthouse has been closed to visitors since 2010 due to dilapidated pedestrian bridge.

The Point Bonita Lighthouse, which closed to visitors in 2012 because of a dilapidated pedestrian bridge, will reopen to the public this weekend, a Golden Gate National Recreation Area spokeswoman said this morning.

Spokeswoman Alexandra Picavet said the lighthouse will once again welcome visitors beginning Saturday, thanks to the completion of a bridge replacement project that began in December 2011.

The lighthouse had closed to visitors in August 2010 because of the worn walkway, which connects the lighthouse to the mainland, Picavet said.

The U.S. Coast Guard maintains the lighthouse, which is located at the southwest tip of the Marin Headlands in a spot park officials say is known as the "world's end" that is reached by a steep half-mile walk.

The National Park Service provides access to visitors on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

It would be nice if the comments section had "Thumbs up / Thumbs down" like the PressRead More Democrat.
