Marin Republican Delegate Heads to GOP Convention

Kevin Krick, chairman of the Marin County Republican Central Committee, is in Florida this week for the Republican National Convention. In an interview with Patch, he shared what outdoor hobbies he prefers and how he's similar to Paul Ryan.

When Kevin Krick, chairman of the Marin County Republican Central Committee, attends the Republican National Convention in Florida this week, it’ll be his first time as a delegate. But Krick is no newbie to a Republican Convention – he worked at a GOP convention in Philadelphia when he was living on the East Coast – or Republican politics.

Krick is the senior director of security and environment for the Oakland-based container shipping company APL. He lives in Fairfax with his wife and their 10-year-old and 12-year-old boys.

He arrived in Tampa Bay, Florida on Aug. 25, in time for the California delegation’s welcome party that evening. The convention is from Aug. 27-30.

Krick took some time to answer some questions about his live in Fairfax and his stance on the GOP presidential ticket.

How long have you lived in Fairfax?
“We moved out here 2006. I got a job offer that brought us from D.C. to San Francisco. We went looking around in Marin and stumbled into Fairfax and loved it. It had everything. We just looked at it from a logistic point of view (it had the bus, ferry at the end of Drake) and realized how fun it was as well. When we moved to our second home in Marin, it was also in Fairfax.”

What are some of your hobbies?

“If I’m at home, hobby wise, I’ll be doing just about anything outdoors.” But Krick said he spends a lot of his time mountain biking. “Being in Fairfax, it’s rare I will put my bike on the car. I usually will just ride out of the garage.”
Krick is also heavily involved in the Boy Scouts, which both of his sons are involved in. His younger son is in the PAC7 and the older is now in Troop 15, in which Krick is a Scout Master. “We do high adventure stuff – backpacking, splunking, hiking, mountain biking and camping.”

What are you looking forward to at the convention?
“My number one is hearing Governor Romney speak. I’ve had several opportunities to hear him and meet him. He’s always a great speaker and he’s the whole reason we’re there. And now that he’s with Paul Ryan, I’m excited to hear him in person.”

What are your thoughts on Paul Ryan?
“I knew of his position on the budget and leadership in the budget committee beforehand, but I didn’t’ know the finer details of his personal life. So then I’m looking at the guy on the screen and given his profile and I’m like ‘Hey, I’m 42, I’m Catholic, I’m a Republican and I love the outdoors.’ He sounds like my kind of guy. He and I have the same take on the budget as well.”

Fairfax has a bit of a reputation for being more liberal (or perhaps, Green, as ). What’s it like being a Republican in Fairfax?

“There are more of us there than you think. It’s interesting, it comes up in conversation and people realize, ‘wait you’re a Republican as well’.”
