Discussion Topic: Mayor Al Boro Announces Retirement

What do you think about Boro's service as mayor of San Rafael?

After almost 20 years of service, Mayor Al Boro announced that he will be retiring.

"I've really enjoyed having the opportunity to help lead the city — to get us where we are today," Boro told the Marin Independent Journal. "We are the largest city (in Marin). We have the most diversity. I'm very proud of how we've dealt with diversity."

Before he was elected to City Council in 1987, Boro served on the San Rafael Planning Commission for 16 years and was an executive at Pacific Bell. He became mayor in 1991. Since then, he’s been a leader in bringing more affordable housing to the city and in the revitalization of the downtown area.

Although it is not official, Boro told the Marin Independent Journal that he will be endorsing former councilman Gary Phillips, 66, in next election. Councilman Greg Brockbank is also considering running.
