City Council Hopefuls Discuss Pensions, Affordable Housing, SMART

Watch a video of highlights from a recent candidates forum.

At a recent North San Rafael Coalition of Residents meeting, City Council hopefuls , , and incumbent Damon Connolly discussed their perspectives on issues ranging from fostering small businesses in downtown to the Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit commuter train.

Candidates filled out questionnaires prior to the meeting. A complete form showing all their answers is available on the right. The video shows some highlights from the forum.

Editor's note: Since council member Damon Connolly is running as an incumbent and you can only vote once on our poll, so we did not include him. This poll is only meant for the new candidates. Sorry for the technical limitations.

Huzzah! Nicole, you get a prize as the FIRST news organization to post the recording of a candidate's forum or debate online this year. The prize is buying yourself a cookie. But seriously, I've been trying to track down candidate events for the SR Mayor's Debate, Novato debate, the San Anselmo debate, the Corte Madera debate and the Larkspur debate but can't find a thing. In a place like Marin, that's crazy, so good job to you for getting one of these things online.

Hey David, I know there are a lot of events happening this week for San Rafael. The mayor candidates will be debating Tuesday at the North San Rafael Coalition of Residents, Wednesday at Dominican University in Guzman Hall and Friday there will be a telecast debate from the League of Women Voters (that I will help moderate). For council members, there's another forum for League of Women Voters that will be telecast on Saturday (not open to the public) at 10 a.m. Hope that helps!

Oh yes, thanks. I'll keep an ear out for recordings. I typically can't make it events, and I don't get public access TV, so I look out for video or audio online. Marin has a paucity of actual recordings of non-government events, so it makes it hard to cover six elections (I think it's just six?). You're the first one to make one of them easier. Made my day.

I don't like the fact that you did not include Damon Connolly in your poll. While you state your poll is not scientific, it is not fair to characterize this race as having only 3 candidates when there are indeed 4. I think you mislead voters who may, even though wrongly doing so, be relying on your article to tell them who is running by setting up that poll. Please correct the poll or make a statement saying why you did not include candidate and current councilmember Connolly who is running for re-election please.

Hey Carol, Due to technical limitations our polls only allow readers one vote, even though candidates are running for two seats on the City Council. So I limited this poll to just the new candidates. All the stories that feature this poll have an editor's note at the bottom explaining this. Thanks for the feedback.
