Bob Silvestri to Speak at Novato Housing Meeting

Critic of state and regional mandates to address the housing portions of required general plan updates.

An advocate of local control over long-term housing planning will speak Wednesday at a public meeting hosted by the San Marin Compatible Housing Coalition.

The topic will be Novato's housing element, a critical part of the city's general plan, which has to be updated every seven years by law. The housing element contains locations of properties around the city that could be rezoned for future housing developments, including such high-density complexes that we be made available to low-income residents.

Guest speaker Bob Silvestri is a founding member of the Friends of Mill Valley and an advocate of local control over housing planning. He has vast experience in affordable housing and is critical of the state and regional mandates for housing allotments. Silvestri, who writes a popular Local Voices blog on local Patch sites, is the author of “The Best Laid Plans: Our Planning and Affordable Housing Challenges in Marin.”

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at All Saints Lutheran Church, across San Marin Drive from San Marin High School.

For details about the city's housing element, see this page on the city's website.

Roger, the code requires equality. The state of California addresses the distribution of low and very low housing in an equitable manner in Government Code Section 65584(d). This requires “Increasing the housing supply and the mix of housing types, tenure, and affordability in all cities and counties within the region in an equitable manner, which shall result in each jurisdiction receiving an allocation of units for low- and very low income households.” This was clearly not the case from 1999 to 2006 an should be considered moving foward.

Thank you to everyone who is planning to attend. Having looked at the HCD comments on the Novato Housing Element, it's clear to me that now is the time push back hard before more bad precedents are set. For some recent comments about the Housing Element being drafted in Mill Valley, please see: http://millvalley.patch.com/blog_posts/our-draft-housing-element-lets-finally-get-it-right

Here are the same commenters that seem more worried about protecting their idyllic home on their 1/2 acre far away from the realities of society. At the same time, these commenters complain that there is not enough money to service their needs. Rather, how about you focus on the issues that make the biggest difference in our world and our community like assuring that the education of our kids is at the highest quality and at the highest funding possible.
