San Rafael Fire Chief Chris Gray has applauded the staff at San Rafael’s Whole Foods Market for their quick response to a Monday fire.

The response “was all you could hope for,” Gray said in an e-mail to Patch. “Sure wish it went this well all the time.”

The staff smelled smoke, called 911, investigated the fire and made sure people were out of the area before using a fire extinguisher on the blaze, Gray said.

When firefighters arrived at the store, located at 340 Third Street, the staff led firefighters directly to the fire scene and helped with cleanup. The Health Department was contacted as a precaution due to the smoke and extinguisher discharge, Gray said.

“Everything went right and the store was close for an hour,” Gray said late on Monday. “Terrific job by Whole Foods, they certainly must practice their emergency plan because today it showed.”
