Unable to Stop Car, Driver Crashes into San Rafael Transit Center

Vehicle catches fire after crashing into a concrete wall Sunday afternoon in downtown San Rafael.

A car crashed into the San Rafael transit center Sunday afternoon and burst into flames after the driver couldn’t get the vehicle to stop.

The driver started experienced mechanical problems with the vehicle while heading south on Highway 101 early Sunday afternoon. After exiting the freeway at the Central San Rafael exit, the driver couldn’t stop the vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, as it continued down Hetherton Street, doing “everything possible to slow the vehicle down while avoiding other vehicles and pedestrians,” according to San Rafael Fire Captain Kyle Hamilton.

Near the transit center, the driver “apparently chose to slow the vehicle by striking a lot concrete wall/bench,” according to Hamilton. The vehicle caught fire after the impact.

The driver wasn’t injured after striking the wall, but was a little shaken from the incident, according to Hamilton.
