Suspects Nabbed After Attempted Burglary and Chase in Canal Area

Friday incident started when car was being burglarized and ended with an arrest following the crashing of a stolen vehicle.

Two suspects from the East Bay were jailed Friday on multiple charges after an attempted burglary and subsequent chase through San Rafael in cars and on foot, police said Saturday.

Alfred Green, a 31-year-old El Sobrante resident, and Sandra Lorena Ibarra, a 30-year-old Richmond resident, were booked into Marin County Jail after being arrested at 3:10 p.m. Friday by San Rafael police, Sgt. Mike Vergara said.

Vergara said the incident started at a San Rafael residence where occupants came home to find somebody burglarizing their car. The male suspect pulled a screwdriver and warned the car’s owners to stay away, then fled with a female suspect on foot, Vergara said. Police officers who responded to the home were talking to the car owners when the suspects were spotted down the street, and police set up a perimeter, the sergeant said.

The suspects were seen speeding by in a Honda sedan and followed into the Canal Area. Police found the Honda crashed in the 400 block of Canal Street, but the suspects had fled on foot, Vergara said.

After another police perimeter was established, a witness reported seeing the male suspect jumping fences in the area, and officers arrested both suspects shortly thereafter in the 500 block of Canal Street, Vergara said.

Police discovered that the Honda had been stolen in Oakland.

Green faces four felony counts — assault with a deadly weapon, making threats, operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent and receipt of a stolen vehicle — and five misdemeanor charges and is held on $50,000 bail, according to the jail booking log. Ibarra was held on felony counts of conspiracy to commit a crime, receiving stolen property and operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent. Her bail was set at $25,000.
