Suspected Drunk Driver Arrested After Hit and Run

San Rafael police arrested a man accused of hitting a family of four on Canal Street.

San Rafael police arrested a man on suspicion of a hit and run in the Canal neighborhood Sunday night, according to Sgt. Christopher Coale.

Gabino Mendoza Morales, 35, was booked in Marin County Jail at 11 p.m. July 24 on felony charges of a hit and run and drunken driving, as well as a misdemeanor for driving without a license. His bail is set at $50,000.

Morales and a friend left the on 80 Medway Rd. and drove down Canal Street at 10:21 p.m. At Novato Street, Morales made a U-turn, lost control of the car and hit the left side of the vehicle behind him, carrying a family of four including a 5-year-old, Coale said.

The driver of the family and one passenger in the back seat complained of neck and back pains and the five-year-old suffered minor cuts. No one was transported to the hospital, according to Coale.

Officers nearby heard the crash and rushed to the scene. Witnesses provided descriptions of the suspects and Morales was arrested at 329 Bahia Way.
