Suspect Arrested After Neighborhood Dispute Turned Violent

A fight at Canal apartment building turned ugly and ended in an arrest.

San Rafael police officers arrested a man accused of injuring a neighbor after an argument turned violent Sunday night.

San Rafael resident Eliseo Mejia Chavez, 24, was booked in May 6, on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats, defacing property and participating in a street gang.

Police arrived at the parking lot of an apartment complex at 260 Canal St. around 5:40 p.m. Sunday. After interviewing several witnesses, investigators determined that Chavez assaulted a neighbor with an edge weapon – any weapon with sharp edges like a knife or a pair of scissors – and the victim received minor injuries. The victim did not go to the hospital.

Police could not reveal the details of the weapon used, since the case is still under investigation, Sgt. Raul Aguilar said. Chavez is also accused of breaking the window of a vehicle during the dispute.

“The suspect is known to the San Rafael Police Department,” Aguilar said.

Chavez’s bail is $50,000.
