UPDATE: SRPD Call Off Search for Gunman

An unknown gunman shot at a car driving by near the intersection of Sonoma Street and Charlotte Drive this afternoon.

After two hours of searching, the San Rafael Police Department called off the search for a gunman who shot at a moving car in the Canal neighborhood this afternoon.

At approximately 2:46 p.m. an unknown suspect standing with a group of around nine people near the intersection of Sonoma Street and Charlotte Drive shot at a car as it drove by.

"At this time we have no information about the people in the car," said Rorhbacher, who noted that witnesses who heard the gunshot reported the incident.

The drivers of the car and the group that included the gunman fled the scene Police set up a perimeter on Sonoma and Fairfax streets between Charlotte Drive and Elaine Way. Marin sheriff deputies and the Novato K-9 unit is assisted in the search.

Police officials reopened the streets for traffic after the two-hour search yielded little evidence. Rorhbacher said they have not received any calls from the people in the car and do not know if anyone was injured.

Wintesses described the suspect as a Hispanic male, 5 feet 10 inches tall with a heavy build, dark complexion and short black hair. The weapon was a handgun.

Police officers will be patrolling the area this evening and going door-to-door seeking leads.

It is not known at this time if the incident was gang-related.
