Shoplifting Turns into Robbery at Safeway, Police Say

A man under the legal drinking age allegedly attempted to shoplift a bottle of alcohol Sunday night.

San Rafael police arrested a local man after he allegedly assaulted a security guard at the Safeway on B Street Sunday night, according to police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher.

At 10:15 p.m., a man walked in to the Safeway and took a bottle of Vermouth off the shelf. When he attempted to leave with the booze concealed in his clothing, a security guard stopped him just outside the grocery store.

When confronted, the man attacked the security gaurd and knocked him down. Police arrived soon after and arrested the suspect, Rohrbacher said.
