Separate Fights Leave Two Arrested, Three Stabbed, Others Struck with Belt and Metal Pipe

The parking lot brawls appear to be unrelated, even though they occurred within the same hour and within less than half a mile of each other.

Two men were arrested and are facing felony assault charges after two separate fights that occurred within less than an hour of each other Sunday evening in San Rafael’s Canal Neighborhood.

Six people were injured — four of them hospitalized — after the brawls.

Three San Rafael men suffered face and head injuries after the first fight, which was reported at 10:02 p.m. and was in a parking lot at the 400 block of Canal Street.

Wilfido Mazariegos Rodas, 32, was arrested after the fight and booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Herminio Lopez, 19 and Cesar Lopez Chilel, 33, were issued citations for being intoxicated in public and fighting in public.

Three men were stabbed and taken to the hospital after the evening’s second parking lot fight, at 40 Sonoma Street.

Officers arrived on the scene around 10:57 p.m. and found a man who was stabbed in his arm and two men with stab wounds in a neighboring complex.

One of the men involved in the fight, 21-year-old Keni Lopez Perez, fled from the scene but later was detained by family and friends of the victims. Lopez Perez was placed under arrest and booked at the Marin County Jail. He is facing three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and battery causing a serious injury.

San Rafael Police Spokesperson Margo Rohrbacher said the incidents do not appear to be related to each other and they both do not appear to be gang related “at this time.”
