San Rafael Woman Subdued After Violent Struggle at Transit Center

Two officers sustained minor injuries while attempting to subdue a woman who allegedly attempted to steal a decorative surfboard.

 

San Rafael Police Officer George Schikore suffered a minor injury early Monday morning after his attempt to stop a San Rafael woman from stealing a decorative surfboard from the San Rafael Transit Center ended in a violent scuffle.

Schikore was driving his patrol call when he saw Winifred Susan Leshane, 37, allegedly dislodge a surfboard from an outdoor display at the downtown transit center around 12:30 a.m. on Monday, San Rafael Police Spokesperson Margo Rohrbacher confirmed.

When Schikore approached the woman, she violently resisted, breaking the officer’s glasses and ripping his badge from his uniform. Other officers arrived to help subdue Leshane. Schikore suffered a minor hand injury and another officer had a small cut after the struggle.

Leshane was booked into Marin County Jail in lieu of $57,000 and is facing seven charges including battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, vandalism, drunk in public and possession of unlawful paraphernalia.

Leshane was arrested last May in the city of Arcata (near Eureka) on suspicion of arson, according to the Eureka Times-Standard.
