Vandal Shatters Marin History Museum Window

The 133-year-old window 'weathered so much' the museum's director said.

Some time after 8:30 p.m. Thursday, an unknown person threw a rock through the 's front window, shattering the 133-year-old glass.

The vandalism occurred sometime between 8:30 pm Thursday night and 8 a.m. Friday morning, according Programs Manager Shelly Jackson. The window was the original.

“It’s more than the cost to replace the front window," Museum Director Michelle Kaufman said. "It’s the irreplaceable cost of the history of the window. They’ve been here for 133 years and they’ve weathered so much."

The Marin History Musuem is located on the former Boyd Estate in San Rafael, which was the home of Arctic explorer and adventurer Louise Arner Boyd. The Boyd Gate House was commissioned in 1879 by Ira Cook and constructed by Adam Murray.Now, it's home to the museum’s exhibits galleries, education room, theater and public program space.

The museum, which is equipped with security systems, never experienced vandalism before, according to Kaufman.

"This vandalism affects more than just those of us who work here and volunteer here. This is an act that hits the heart of Marin’s history," she said.
