A motorist who drove off the U.S. 101 Freeway early this morning was hospitalized with unspecified injuries, authorities said.
The male driver, who is about 30, was driving northbound at McGinnis Parkway when he apparently lost control of his vehicle, San Rafael Fire Battalion Chief Paul Crimmins said.
“He went off the freeway just missing the guard rail and rolled down the embankment into the open parking area down below,” Crimmins said.
Firefighters, San Rafael Police Department officers and the California Highway Patrol found the vehicle on its roof when they arrived on the scene, Crimmins said.
“Firefighters were able to pull him from the vehicle without having to use the ‘jaws of life,’ ” Crimmins said.
The man was conscious after the accident, Crimmins said. He was taken to a trauma center at Marin General Hospital.
