Police Search for Suspect in Drive-up ATM Robbery

An unidentified man robbed a motorist at the 1000 Fourth Street Bank of America drive-up ATM last night.

An unidentified man robbed a motorist at the 1000 Fourth Street Bank of America drive-up ATM at 7:20 p.m.  April 27, according to San Rafael police officers.

The suspect, armed with a knife, approached the motorist while at the ATM and demanded money. After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, the suspect fled on foot toward Court Street and City Plaza. The victim was not harmed.

Police are looking for a white male, 18 to mid 20s, with an average build, approximately 5 feet 7 inches, who was last seen wearing a brown hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, according to the press release.

Anyone with information about this case should contact the San Rafael Police Department at (415) 485-3000 or leave an anonymous tip at 800-222-8477.

ATM robberies are uncommon in San Rafael, according to police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher. Robberies at the walk-up ATMs are more common and "I can't think of the last time when anyone was in a car and this happened," she said. The Bank of America drive-up ATM is located to the rear of the bank in the parking structure.

Police want to remind people to be aware of their surroundings when approaching ATMs and report any suspicious behavior.
