On July 12, a 78-year-old woman was in her car at the Safeway at 950 Gallinas Ave., when a suspect opened the passenger side door and grabbed her purse. The victim struck the suspect several times with her cane. The suspect fled but was stopped by a police officer several miles away. Kevin Earl Holmes, 49, of Novato, was booked in Marin County Jail on suspicion of second-degree robbery.

Explorer visits San Pablo

A black Ford Explorer was reported missing from its parking spot on the 100-block of Woodland Avenue at about 8:46 a.m. on July 13. The victim did not know who might have taken it and said he had not given anyone permission to drive it. The Explorer was entered into the stolen vehicle system. San Rafael Police were notified by San Pablo Police that the vehicle was found in their area about two hours later.

Attempted theft apparently thwarted

An unknown suspect attempted to cut through a brass water pipe at Phoenix Leasing at 2401 Kerner Blvd. The water supply to the building had been disconnected. A maintenance worker said someone had attempted to cut off the back-flow preventer sometime over the weekend of July 9 to July 12. A back-flow preventer had been stolen at a nearby business during the same time period. The brass fitting and installation was valued at $2,500.
