Police Arrest 33 Suspected of Drunken Driving, Holiday Crackdown Continues

The first 10 days of local law enforcement's crackdown on drunken driving resulted in 33 DUI arrests, with two more checkpoints scheduled for the upcoming week, according to police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher. 

From Dec. 14 to 23, officers arrested 33 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and three more for outstanding DUI warrants, Rohrbacher said. 

Stormy weather caused one checkpoint to be canceled over the weekend, but units from San Rafael, Novato and Mill Valley were out in saturation patrols on Friday and Saturday. San Rafael Sgt. Christopher Coale said 112 vehicles were stopped throughout Marin County during that first weekend, 18 field sobriety tests being administered and two drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

San Rafael police also made two drug related arrests that first weekend for being in possession of illegal substances while operating a vehicle on a highway. Two drivers with suspended licenses were arrested, five unlicensed drivers were cited and released and 21 moving safety violations were issued, according to Coale. 

San Rafael has two more checkpoints planned as part of the holiday crackdown that will end Jan. 1. One will be on Friday, Dec. 28 and another on Sunday, Dec. 30 from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.

The checkpoints are funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
