The garage was filled with many items, which fueled the blaze, helping it spread to the attic of the home. Firefighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading into the living space, Gray said.

Firefighters contacted San Rafael's Department of Public Works to assist with some heavy equipment where the garage had partially collapsed to provide better access and safety, Gray said.

The homeowner was evaluated for minor burns that he apparently received when attempting to fight the fire and refused treatment or transport, according to Gray. No other injuries were reported.
