House Fire on Las Gallinas Ave. Destroys Garage, Damages Adjacent Home

Late morning blaze Saturday caused the garage to collapse while firefighters were battling it, fire officials said.

Fire crews from across Marin have controlled a house fire that started in a garage and caused more than $225,000 in damage to the home and an adjacent property late this morning in San Rafael, according to Fire Chief Chris Gray.

The one-alarm fire at a home in the 200 block of Las Gallinas Avenue was reported just before noon, Gray said.

When firefighters arrived, a man – one of the home's two residents – was attempting to put out the fire that had started in the detached garage, Gray said.

The garage was filled with many items, which fueled the blaze, helping it spread to the attic of the home. Firefighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading into the living space, Gray said.

The garage collapsed while firefighters were attacking the flames, Gray said.

The fire also caused smoke damage to an adjacent home, as well as damage to an in-law unit at the rear of the adjacent property, Gray said.

All the items stored in the garage have been destroyed, Gray said. No one was inside the home when the fire started, and no injuries have been reported, he said.

As of 12:45 p.m. the fire was under control, he said.

The American Red Cross has been notified to help the displaced residents.
