Memorial Day Weekend Crackdown on Drunk Drivers

CHP and San Rafael Police will conduct traffic enforcements starting tomorrow.

Starting tomorrow, California Highway Patrol and San Rafael police officers will be on the lookout for impaired drivers over the holiday weekend, according to Traffic Sgt. Christopher Coale.

An enforcement campaign, which will include checkpoints and saturation patrols for motorists driving under the influence, will run from Friday through Monday, according to Coale.

“Sobriety Checkpoints are a proven deterrent along with the ‘High Visibility’ enforcement campaigns to change behavior such as drunk driving, driving unrestrained and driving distracted,” said Chris Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety.

One checkpoint will be held in Novato in memory of  9-year-old Melody Osheroff’s death from a collision with a drunk driver at San Marin Drive in 2009.

Officers ask drivers to be responsible and have a designated driver if they decide to drink, and to report drunk drivers by calling 911.
