Marin Authorities Bust 24 People for DUI during Memorial Day Weekend

What's your reaction to the DUI patrols and checkpoint results?

By Jessica Mullins

Special Memorial Day weekend DUI patrols throughout Marin County and one DUI checkpoint in Novato yielded 24 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, double the amount of arrests made during the same holiday weekend in 2012, according to San Rafael Police officials.

Four DUI warrants were also served during the weekend, according to the San Rafael Police.

In 2012, local agencies made 12 DUI arrests during the same time frame.

There were 2,086 drivers screened at the Novato checkpoint, held May 24 in the westbound lanes of San Marin Drive at West Campus Drive.

At the checkpoint, police arrested two people for DUI and another individual was arrested for possession of a loaded firearm and possession of methamphetamine.

They also issued two moving violations, performed eight field sobriety tests, cited 17 unlicensed drivers and cited 9 people for driving on a suspended drivers license. There were eight vehicles towed from the checkpoint.

California Highway Patrol officers were also on the prowl for impaired drivers during the holiday weekend. There were 117 drivers arrested on suspicion of DUI on Friday through Sunday morning in the Bay Area, according to CHP officials.

More anti-DUI efforts will be launched in Marin during the Independence Day holiday and again in August for a 18-day campaign that ends on Labor Day.

Funding for the DUI patrols and checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
