For unknown reasons, the driver allowed his 1993 Honda Civic to drift into the dirt in the center divider, Hohmeister said. He apparently overcorrected the car, and swerved across two lanes of traffic toward the right-hand shoulder.

The victim, who was wearing a seatbelt, crashed through a guardrail on the right shoulder and the vehicle landed in a ditch.

His identity was not released until his family could be notified.

Alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
