Local Man's Condition Improves After Assault at Candlestick Park

A 26-year-old man's condition has improved since being transported to San Francisco General Hospital with life threatening injuries following an assault at Candlestick Park this weekend.

A San Rafael man remains in the hospital, but his condition has improved, a hospital spokesperson said.

The 26-year-old local man and two other men were taken to San Francisco General Hospital after one was beaten unconscious and two suffered gunshot wounds during and after Saturday night's preseason game between the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders.

The beating victim was from San Rafael and was knocked unconscious in an upper-level restroom between 7:15 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, San Francisco General Hospital spokeswoman Rachael Kagan said this morning.

A 25-year-old man who sustained life-threatening injuries in a shooting outside the park is also in fair condition.

The second shooting victim, a man in his 20s, suffered less serious wounds and Kagan said he is not at the hospital today.

Police are treating the two shootings as separate incidents.

Investigators are seeking a person of interest in connection with one of the shootings.

He is described as a Pacific Islander man between 25 and 30 years old, between 6 foot 3 inches and 6 foot 5 inches tall, and weighing 225 to 260 pounds. He had a goatee and long curly hair tied up in a ponytail, and was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

"Our entire organization is hopeful for the recovery of the victims from (Saturday) night's violence," the 49ers said in a statement released Sunday. "The 49ers' primary concern has always been, and will continue to be, provided a safe and enjoyable environment for our fans on game day."

The National Football League also released a statement.

"We deplore the activities of a handful of fans at (Saturday) night's game between the 49ers and the Raiders," the NFL said. "We pledge our full support to Mayors Lee and Quan and to state and local law enforcement agencies."

The 49ers next home game is Saturday against the Houston Texans at 5 p.m.
