A suspected drunken driver from San Rafael crashed on Doyle Drive Friday night after allegedly fleeing from California Highway Patrol officers, injuring himself and his passenger.
The incident began around 11:45 p.m. Friday, when the CHP received reports of a possible drunk driver on southbound U.S. Highway 101, south of the Marin City exit in Marin County, according to Sgt. Marcus Barthalomew.
A CHP unit spotted the vehicle, a blue Nissan Sentra, in the southbound toll booth lane of the Golden Gate Bridge and made a traffic stop.
The officers noticed that both the driver and passenger appeared intoxicated and had an open container of alcohol in the vehicle, Barthalomew said. When they asked the driver to get out of the car, however, he sped away at a high speed on southbound Doyle Drive.
The CHP pursued, and the vehicle hit a concrete rail on the right-hand shoulder several times just south of the Battery Tunnel. The car swerved and hit the concrete center barrier, pushing a section of the barrier around two feet into northbound Doyle Drive, and came ot rest in the far left southbound lane.
The driver, San Rafael resident Calvin Webb, 53, suffered a minor injury to his face and appeared to be drifting in and out of consciousness, Barthalomew said. His passenger, San Rafael resident Wade Boswell, 42, complained of pain to his chest.
Both were transported to San Francisco General Hospital, and Webb was placed under arrest.
Several lanes of Doyle Drive were blocked for around an hour by the crash.
