Update: Grass and Woodlands Fire Threatens Homes

The fire has gone to two alarms, with firefighters stations at several points to protect structures.

Update:
The fire has been contained at 5-10 acres. No injuries have been reported.

Earlier evacuations have been lifted and residents are returning to their homes.

No homes were lost, although some decks were burned.

Original Story:

Firefighters are managing to keep a 5-acre, 2-alarm grass and oak woodlands fire east of U.S. Highway 101 away from a mobile home park and homes on a hillside in San Rafael this afternoon.

The fire that was reported around 12:15 p.m. is burning a hillside in an area north of McInnis Parkway, south of Professional Parkway and west of Yosemite Road, San Rafael Fire Chief Chris Gray said.

Structures on top of the hill were threatened but none have burned, Gray said.

The fire also threatened the south side of the Contempo Marin Mobile Home Park at the base of the hill on Yosemite Road.

Firefighters are stationed at both locations to keep the flames at bay, Gray said. "The wind has been pushing things around, but there's a lot of defensible space," Gray said.

"Firefighters are in six different places at once," he said.
