Firefighters Make Quick Work of San Rafael Structure Fire

The blaze threatened adjacent buildings.

San Rafael firefighters made quick work of a Thursday night structure fire in the Canal area, authorities said.

Dispatchers first received report of the blaze on 136 Front Street at about 9:45 p.m., San Rafael Fire Chief Chris Gray said.

No injuries were reported in a blaze that caused damage estimated at $100,000, Gray said.

Firefighters arriving on the scene found smoke and fire coming through the roof and the rear portion of an industrial building used as a wood cabinet shop, Gray said.

The San Rafael Police Department and Ross Valley Fire Chief McCarthy assisted a crew of 19 firefighters under the command of Battalion Chief Jeff Rowan.

They knocked down the fire in 15 minutes, Gray said.

“Firefighters made a quick and aggressive attack of the fire that threatened to spread to surrounding buildings that included vehicles and a residence,” Gray said.

“The majority of the building was saved due to the efforts of firefighters and a prompt, purposeful response.”

The fire started in the rear portion of the building where a large amount of combustible and flammable material was stored, Gray said.

An adjacent landscaping business and a vehicle parked to the rear of the building were also damaged.

An overloaded circuit is the likely cause of what’s believed to be an electrical fire, Gray said.

The blaze is under investigation.
